The German Shepherd Breed.
|
![]() Horand von Grafrath Born 1st January 1895 |
"Horand embodied
for the enthusiasts of that time the fulfilment of their fondest dreams.
He was big for that period, between 24" and 24 1/2", even for the
present day a good medium size, with powerful frame, beautiful lines,
and a nobly formed head. Clean and sinewy in build, the entire dog was
one live wire. His character was on a par with his exterior qualities;
marvellous in his obedient fidelity to his master, and above all else,
the straightforward nature of a gentleman with a boundless zest for
living. Although untrained in puppy hood, nevertheless obedient to the
slightest nod when at this master's side; but when left to himself, the
maddest rascal, the wildest ruffian and incorrigible provoker of strife.
Never idle, always on the go; well disposed to harmless people, but no
cringer, mad about children and always in love. What could not have been
the accomplishments of such a dog if we, at that time, had only had
military or police service training? His faults were the failings of his
upbringing, never of his stock. He suffered from a superfluity of
unemployed energy, for he was in Heaven when someone was occupied with
him and was then the most tractable of dog." |
By nature a German Shepherd is wary of strangers, though once one is accepted by him he is a friend for life. He is an efficient obedience worker, quick to learn and what is learned will never be forgotten. It is an active breed and thrives on work—little is beyond its capabilities. Fleet of foot, powerful yet graceful and nimble, he is the epitome of those qualities considered to be ideal within a dog.
The German Shepherd although a loner craves human companionship and will respond to his owner’s mood whether this be lying quietly by his side or romping across the fields; indeed, at all times, his one desire is to be with you and to please you.
With a keen sense of humour and intelligent mind he enjoys playful games but, in defence of his family, can become a frightening adversary that one would be well advised to keep clear of. He can fit into a flat or a mansion as the need may be, for he is happy wherever you are happy although exercise is a must for this bold dog both physical and mental.
In bringing a German Shepherd into your home, you are welcoming a new family member and he will quickly feel a part of it. Your house, your garden, your possessions and in fact all that you own will from then on be in his special care. He needs your love, but he needs also correct attention to his grooming, exercise, food, and general welfare. Given these, your German Shepherd will devote his very life to you and you will be the richer for this and for the companionship and love you both will share.
